FBI Memo: CIA Liaison Material – George Spellmeyer (Cuban Fishing Vessel 'Theresa and Julia')

This FBI Headquarters memorandum, dated 06/20/1962 and originally classified Top Secret, transmits CIA liaison material regarding a subject named George Spellmeyer. According to the memo, a Bureau source reported that on 6/7/62 the Cuban Foreign Ministry advised the Czechoslovakian Embassy that a visa had been granted to George Spellmeyer, described as the owner of a U.S. fishing vessel known as 'Theresa and Julia.' The source noted Spellmeyer was possibly identical to a George C. Speelmeyer listed in the New York City telephone directory. On 6/14/62 the CIA advised it had received sensitive information indicating the vessel was leaving Havana for the Isle of Pines, site of a Cuban prison, and remarked that it would be unusual for a U.S. citizen's fishing vessel to be involved in such activity. The memo instructs recipient field offices (New York, Tampa, Jacksonville) to discreetly check with local Coast Guard representatives, determine the subject's background, identify Speelmeyer, and assess any connections to Cuban matters, while cautioning that the reason for the inquiry and the source information must not be disclosed. The document was released by the National Archives on 03/18/2025 under the President John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act of 1992.
