CIA Memorandum: Media Inquiry to Cuban Exile Journalist re Watergate (7 May 1973)

This CIA memorandum, dated May 1973 and signed by James E. Flannery, Acting Chief of the Western Hemisphere Division, was addressed 'for your information only' to the Deputy Director for Operations. It reports that on 7 May 1973, Station WH/Miami advised headquarters that Cuban exile journalist Rene Viera Gonzalez—who writes for Diario Las Americas and owns the Westchester Mall Bookstore in Miami—had received a call in early May from a man identifying himself as Gottlieb (believed to be Sanford 'Sandy' Gottlieb, formerly of the National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy and reportedly then with the New York Times Washington bureau). Gottlieb asked what Miamians were saying about the Watergate case and about the participation of Cuban exiles, naming Reinaldo Pico (former 2506 Brigade member), Orlando Piedra, Rolando Masferrer, Joaquin Sanjenis, Juan A. Paula, and Edgardo Buttari (reportedly associated with Charles 'Bebe' Rebozo). Viera, recommended to Gottlieb by former Agency asset Ernesto Betancourt, declined to provide information. The memo also discusses CIA proprietary operations in Miami (referred to under cryptonyms), cover arrangements involving Northwest Management Service and a witting law firm, and planned travel by an officer named Evans to Nassau and Miami on 10 May 1973. It notes Howard Hunt's prior awareness of certain operations. Attachments were biographic summaries of persons of interest.
