CIA Dispatch: PAWLEY Business Interests in the Dominican Republic

This one-page CIA dispatch, dated 10 June 1958 and microfilmed in July 1983, was sent from the Chief of Station in Ciudad Trujillo to the Chief, WHD (Western Hemisphere Division). Marked 'For info only,' it details business interests of William D. Pawley in the Dominican Republic. Beyond his substantial investments in minerals exploitation, the report notes negotiations being concluded for Pawley's purchase of the Hotel Hamaca in Boca Chica, a resort town near a nearly completed new international airport about 30 km east of Ciudad Trujillo. A second activity, described as kept 'very much under wraps,' is a concession granted to Pawley for the procurement and worldwide sale of all new issues of Dominican postage stamps, managed by his brother Edward P. Pawley from an office in the Dominican post office building. The source of the stamp information is identified as Mrs. Nora Britzius, a citizen employed by Pawley in the business, who volunteered the information. The document was released by the National Archives on 18 March 2025 as part of the JFK Assassination Records collection.
