CIA Report on Antonio RODRIGUEZ Echasabal

This four-page document from the JFK Assassination Records 2025 release consists of a CIA routing dispatch to the Chief of Station, Paris, and an attached memorandum dated 5 February 1962 reporting on Antonio RODRIGUEZ Echasabal. Born in Cuba on 17 August 1913, RODRIGUEZ held a master's degree in agriculture and lived in Haiti roughly eighteen years, becoming a Haitian citizen and owning a Port-au-Prince meat market before returning to Cuba. After Castro assumed power, he took over the Cuban Embassy in Port-au-Prince in January 1959 and was named Ambassador to Haiti. The report describes his alleged complicity in a July 1959 Cuban raid on Haiti, two attempts on his life, and subsequent postings as Cuban Ambassador to Guatemala (November 1959, expelled March 1960) and Karachi, Pakistan (November 1960). During 1961 his social contacts shifted almost exclusively to Soviet-satellite and Chinese Communist diplomats before he apparently decided to defect. The Department of State denied him a visa; he arrived in France in January 1962 and received French permission to reside in Martinique, departing France on 31 January 1962. The CIA requests results of any French debriefing of RODRIGUEZ. Family members named include his wife Edith JONES (of Haitian origin), son Antonio RODRIGUEZ Jones (born 24 August 1943, Havana), and sister-in-law Yvonne JONES, a secretary at the Pan American Health Organization.
